California Ballet’s roster of dancers has seen some changes for the 47th season with promotions and additions. The company is excited to announce two new principals!
Ana da Costa joins California Ballet from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She received her training from the Centro de Dança. She comes to the company from the Theatro Municipal de Rio de Janeiro, where she danced as a first soloist. Ana will make her California Ballet debut in this season’s Giselle in the title role.
Trystan Merrick was seen last year in Beyond the Barre, dancing the gorgeous pas de deux from Romeo and Juliet with Chie Kudo. Before that, he appeared with Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo, touring internationally. Trystan officially joins the company this year as a principal dancer, and will begin the season in the role of Prince Albrecht in Giselle.
Kicking off the list of promotions for the 47th season is Jeremy Zapanta. Remembered for his dynamic performance as Lead Russian in last year’sThe Nutcracker, Jeremy has been promoted to the rank of soloist this season.
Promotions from apprentice to corps de ballet include Bonnie Lee, who appeared as the Lilac Fairy in last season’s Sleeping Beauty, and California Ballet School trained Kristina Gibson.
- Joining the California Ballet Company ranks this year as apprentices are Emily Bosworth, Rachel Cahayla-Wynn, Topaz Davis, and Brigitte Edwards.
- Soloist Rebecca Correia and corps dancer Tess Lane began a cross-country journey this past summer, starring in the dance documentary Take Your Place.
- Corps de ballet Tara Hutton continues to enjoy a successful career in the Southern California fashion industry as a model.
- Corps dancer Brik Middlekauff spent time last season away from California Ballet as she stepped into the shoes of Ballet Mistress for Sacramento Ballet.
