Music Director, John Stubbs
John Stubbs was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the California Ballet Company in 1996.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he has a bachelor's degree from S.I.U. at Carbondale and a Master's degree in violin performance from the University of Arizona. While attending these schools, he was not only active in performing music with dancers but was able to gain valuable experience conducting as well. He was a member of the Memphis Symphony and Tucson Symphony before joining the San Diego Symphony in 1977 and the San Diego Opera in 1989. Mr. Stubbs has been associated with the California Ballet for the past twenty years both as a violinist in the orchestra and as Musical Advisor.
Mr. Stubbs conducts the San Diego Symphony for the California Ballet Company's productions and has guest conducted the Colorado Springs Symphony and the Wyoming Symphony for CBC performances of The Nutcracker on tour. Recently Mr. Stubbs conducted the San Diego Chamber Orchestra for the California Ballet Company's participation in the re-opening Gala of the Balboa Theatre. In addition to conducting ballet standards such as The Nutcracker, Paquita, and Serenade, he has conducted premieres of new works with music by Bach, Vivaldi, De Falla, Albinoni, George Crumb, and Yoav Talmi. His passion for bringing music and musicians together with dance has facilitated the creation of critically praised works by resident choreographers. His reduced arrangement of The Nutcracker was written for the California Ballet Company and is available at his website for sale or rent by going to Editions Diaghilev.
While continuing his duties as violinist in the symphony and opera, he finds participation in California Ballet Company's effort for artistic growth an exciting challenge. Mr. Stubbs is married to CBC Prima Ballerina Denise Dabrowski.
