California Ballet’s annual Director’s Luncheon was held on June 14, 2016 in the beautiful Grand Salon of the company’s home, the San Diego Civic Theatre. Attendees included longtime supporters of California Ballet, members of the California Ballet Association, the Board of Trustees, CBC Dancers and staff, members of the press, and such notables as Welton Jones, retired Theatre Critic; Victoria Hamilton, Arts and Culture Advocate; Elizabeth Doran, Executive Director of San Diego Theatres, Inc.; and Dave Roberts from the County Board of Supervisors.
The menu consisted of delicious Thai food from Takhrai Thai. A tremendous thank you to CBA Jewel Circle members Ron and Nikki Mar for your time and generosity for providing the meal.
Sanjeev Dhand, President of the Board of Trustees, started off the event by introducing Director Maxine Mahon, who gave a brief overview of California Ballet’s long history in San Diego. Next, keynote speaker Bill Virchis applauded Maxine for holding the vision, pioneer spirit and dogged determination that has kept California Ballet on the forefront of the San Diego Arts scene for 48 years. Board member and CBC Music Director John Stubbs introduced Dana Zimbric, who will be joining CBC as a Music Conductor this coming season. Marketing Director Diane Grosman unveiled Nutcracker Connect, an expansion of CBC’s Sharing the Art Program, and Joe Shumate talked about the new season’s emphasis on supporting the artists of California Ballet through our Dancer Connect initiative.
Director Maxine Mahon concluded the luncheon by revealing which productions were planned for the next two years, leading up to CBC’s 50th Anniversary Gala, while the audience received a tantalizing sneak peek through video clips of the shows.
