California Ballet Company mounted a full-length production of the 19th century classic, Sleeping Beauty, March, 2005 at the San Diego Civic Theatre. Staged by company Director Maxine Mahon, after the original by Marius Petipa, the ballet is based on the timeless Charles Perrault fairytale.
The leading role of Princess Aurora was performed by Guest Artist Polina Semionova, Principal dancer of the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin Ballet. This was Semionova’s debut performance in the United States. Guest Artist David Makhateli, First Soloist with the Royal Ballet, danced the role of Prince Desire. Guest Artist Evgeniy Lushkin, former American Ballet Theatre company member, danced the role of Bluebird, a role made famous in the original by legendary dancer/teacher Enrico Cecchetti. California Ballet Company Principal Jennifer Curry danced the role of Lilac Fairy while the wicked fairy, Carabosse, was performed by Clarissa Palhegyi. Sets and costumes for this production were on loan from the Eugene Ballet in Oregon.
“Semionova’s Aurora was a vision of youthful beauty, especially in the Rose Adagio………(her) gorgeous high kicks and delicate balances suggested a spirited young girl” Jennifer de Poyen, SDUnion-Tribune 2005
“In fact, San Diego……should be cognizant of the concentrated work of California Ballet and its Director Maxine Mahon. Ms. Mahon’s determination to tackle the most difficult of all classical ballet productions, and her intelligence in recognizing that The Sleeping Beauty must have historical ‘provenance’ and remarkable principal interpreters has given your city the opportunity to witness and own what few American cities have: the full-length Petipa-Tchaikovsky crown jewel. Treasure it, support it, and truly be thankful. San Diego, you are in rare company”.
